What is your role in this company?

I am a member of a group of amateur dancers. Each week we have a two-hour practice. Right now it's two nights a week because we have a show in June. And we will certainly have another show before Christmas and for Chinese New Year.

What made you want to join this company?

The company is the Phoenix artistic dance troupe. We offer many shows, each time we represent a variety of different disciplines. Within the company, there are dancers, singers and acrobats. Dance is an activity that I have liked for many years. When I was in college, I was already a part of a troupe and I also attended many dance shows. The Phoenix Company is the best known Chinese dance group in Montreal. Canadian media, including Radio Canada are interested. We even have a website where you can see videos of the shows. When I saw that they were looking for people to incorporate their company, I applied.

How are the donations that you receive for the association used?

The money we collect is used during the shows to promote Chinese culture and allows us to give free performances for the Festival of St Jean and Canada Day.
The donations we receive serve to make the association function, and to fund future shows. Sometimes we help other initiatives in the Chinese community, especially the newspapers.

Do you also share the expense of the association?

For entertainment, we have to buy some accessories. And we also pay a contribution to use the costumes.
We also have a seamstress and a hairdresser who generously help us before and during the show.

What brings you this volunteer activity?

At first, it's fun to dance and spend pleasant moments with other dancers during rehearsals. For me it is also important to contribute to the influence of my culture and to share their traditions with others. Each culture has its own characteristics and must be shared.

We also provide reduced rates for schools' and children’s tickets. So they can practice this discipline and keep it alive even if we do not live in China.

How long have you been dancing in the company?

Only since this year. I felt like doing it for a long time but I never had time. This year, I finally succeeded and I will not stop.

On June 12th, a show was held and some Kelvin Emtech employees went to cheer Li-Yu Pan.

Andrée-Anne Gagné and Aloisia Ata gave us their comments, "A show that was delightful, thanks to the grace of the dancers, whatever their age, and the brilliant costumes. The company takes pleasure in sharing their culture, both traditional and contemporary, through dance and music. "

Li-Yu and her dance troupe were successful in providing the audience will an informative and enjoyable moment.
